Discovering the Essex Coast

Leaving Norfolk very early yesterday morning (Sunday) no one expected the near perfect conditions that greeted the Landscape Group members who made the long journey down to Thorpe Bay on the Thames Estuary. We were able to enjoy nearly two hours out on the sand flats before the tide started to come in quickly photographing the many fishing boats on their moorings before a welcome breakfast in a local café and the chance to warm up...!.

Later we moved on to Shoeburyness and then Lion Creek before heading back mid-afternoon to Norfolk. Hopefully, everyone will have captured a few great images...?

This coming weekend it is the turn of the Nature & Wildlife Group who will be nearer to home out on the North Norfolk Coast photographing this season’s new population of seal pups.

Many NDPS members choose to join one or more of the specialist Groups which concentrate more closely on particular areas of photography and imaging. Visit our website www.ndps.info/overview-of-groups to learn more about our five Special Interest Groups that all meet about once a month.

52 Sunrises in 52 weeks

The Society’s Landscape Group has met regularly over te past year whenever covid restrictions have allowed. What many of us did not realise was that amongst our midst Graeme Taplin a stalwart of the group was also working on his own photo-project.

Here is Graeme’s story

At the beginning of 2021, I embarked on a personal project to film and photograph 52 sunrises for the calendar year. It was simply shooting a sunrise each week and I imagined that couldn't be too tough. I was wrong on that score....it's hard work! Early alarm calls, lots of coffee, cold mornings with numb fingers working the camera and drone. And occasionally awful weather - the weather Apps aren't always right!

On the 31st of December 2021, I completed the 52nd sunrise on a New Year’s Eve shoot at Southwold pier on the Suffolk coast. Thanks to the guys from Norwich & District Photographic Society (NDPS), who were there on many shoots; Justin Minns for getting me onto sunrise shoots in the first place, back in 2016. Special thanks my wife Jane.... for putting up with all those early morning escapes!

Woodland and Coastal Photography workshop with Ruth Grindrod

Do you remember those long days of childhood when you got up early and with a group of friends walked through woodlands and across heaths, made bows and arrows and watched the birds? When everything seemed right about the world and there were no problems to worry about.

Ruth's workshop last Sunday (7th November) wasn't quite as relaxed as this opening paragraph might suggest but a dozen members of the Society’s Landscape Group, armed with tripods and cameras tumbled out of bed around four o'clock in the morning to travel to beautiful Suffolk to practice our photographic techniques armed with the notes and suggestions of Ruth and a lot of personal enthusiasm. Ruth had scouted four venues for the day, Captain's Wood first, just after dawn, another smaller ancient woodland Staverton Thicks, then onto Hollesley Common and ending on the shingle at Shingle Street.

We practiced finding compositions with camera 'phones, tried different frame sizes and took hard and soft images. Ruth's advice was clear and enthusiastic and different for each venue. We tried portrait and landscape modes, using polarisers and checking how the shapes of trees related to one another.

As we were individually afoot in the different venues Ruth came round and offered encouragement and advice to everyone - suggesting dancing around the viewpoint to check different aspects, including leaves and sunlight into the frame for effect, thinking about how the picture might look in black and white.

The day ended on the beach at Shingle Street at sunset. A row of photographers outlined against the night sky with tripods and filters all pointing at the setting sun and all experiencing the good karma of a wonderful day of photography.

The effort of early rising and the hard mental work of working out the shots resulted in a glorious day out. Our thanks to Ruth, not just for the venues, but for the inspiration, ideas and enthusiasm.

Report on the recent Landscape Group Shoot at Brancaster Staithe

There was an excellent turn-out for the recent Landscape Group Shoot at Brancaster Staithe.  Thankfully, rain held off until later in the day as forecast, but the intervals of bright sunshine promised around dawn did not really materialise.  Nevertheless, the moderate winds and the cloud cover provided an opportunity to experiment with filters to capture long-exposure shots that emphasised the movement of the clouds across the sky.

Just two weeks to the start of the New Season at NDPS...

With just two weeks to go before the new season opens at Norwich and District Photographic Society all the final preparations are well advanced and we are working hard to ensure everything goes to plan.

Our programme has contained many superb presentations in the past 12 months during which time our membership has continued to grow, and our regular meetings and Special Interest Group meetings have all been well supported.  Hopefully this season will be even better with many great highlights throughout the season and a number of important new initiatives being introduced.

Here is a summary of the main activities during the first month:
