Norwich & District Photographic Society and Covid-19

On the 16th March the Prime Minister announced the first measures to combat the pandemic and for the third time in just over 100 years our Society could not meet as a group -  two world wars and now a pandemic…!

But on the 23rd March the entire Committee met online, and made a series of bold decisions to have immediate effect – for the foreseeable future no meetings, no landscape groups, no studio shoots, no trips. But the boldest decision of all was to appoint a small steering sub-committee (the In Focus team) with the brief to keep the members connected with one another and to steer the Society and its members through these difficult times. The In Focus team comprising four members of the main Committee, each chosen for their particular skills, met immediately and took the view that the pandemic was an opportunity to take the Society in new directions and allow the members to take part in events that previously had not seemed possible:

  • Special presentations have been arranged almost every week from outstanding photographers from as far away as France, Ireland and the USA who under normal circumstances it would be impossible for the Society to host.

  •  Not only presentations but also photo-competitions have been held by this on-line medium.

  •  An online questionnaire was designed, and all members were asked about their photographic interests, equipment and how they saw the Society progressing which has given us some exciting ideas to work with and implement in the coming weeks and months as we return to normality.

To the great pleasure of the In Focus team, and the full committee, the weekly online meetings have proven to be very successful, with excellent attendance and we are grateful to all our members, speakers and judges who have adapted so effortlessly to this medium and for their encouragement and positive feedback. We have even been able to increase the Society’s paid-up membership…!

Besides organising the weekly online meetings every member has received each week a eNewsletter called ‘In Focus’ that has also proved to be extremely successful.  Besides making sure everyone is kept up to date with what’s going In Focus has offered the chance to spotlight the photographic journeys of individual members and other items of photographic interest.

Today as lockdown restrictions begin to slowly be lifted we have already started to introduce; in addition to the normal weekly online meeting, a regular programme of outdoor events so that members can again begin to socialise (at a safe distance) with one another and renew their passion for photography

Lockdown seemed like an unmitigated disaster but the Society has come together and continues to flourish. Of course we are not out of the woods yet but the signs are very promising. We are looking ahead to next year and being able to use the skills we have learned to be Innovative, Creative and Passionate.
