Studio Group

...A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people...
— Ann Leibovitz

Norwich & District Photographic Society’s Studio Group actively enables members who participate to learn this genre of photography in a friendly environment.  Regular shoots are organised with the opportunity to photograph experienced models – both male and female. These can be for example portraiture, fashion, and role play studies. From time to time we also set-up a variety of other shoots for example, still-life and desktop macro photography

Shoots take place on the Second Monday evening of each month at The Dairy Barn Studio in Beccles or one of the other local photographic studios available to the group or another suitable indoor location. The shoot starts at 7pm. but full details for each shoot are also published beforehand.

Since all studio sessions are self-financing the participants have to cover the additional costs to the Society such as studio hire, studio equipment and the model’s fee. Although the cost of hiring a model varies depending upon their experience and the theme of the shoot we have adopted a fixed charge of £20 per shoot..

So that everyone has the opportunity to get some good shots at each meeting attendance is usually limited to six (6) photographers so as to to give each member adequate time. Studio and/or flash lighting is normally provided so the only thing needed to participate is a camera. If possible when there is huge demand to attend a particular shoot every effort is made to repeat the session again later in the month.

Models who currently work regularly with the Society include:

  • Hayley Bird - a real passion for creativity, detail, exploring colours and styles.

  • Estelle Long - works with a variety of genres and enjoys the versatility of being able to learn new skills that each opportunity offers.

  • Cathy Wilson - experienced shooting beauty, fashion, bridal, dance, and open to suggestions. Aside from part-time modelling interests include dancing, acting, and singing.

Last season we also used Chrissie Lake, Andy Jennings, Ann-Marie Doggett, Emily Mathers and Maretta Vergette. Other ocal models who are interested in working with the Studio Group are also welcome and should contact the Society for further details. Email ndps.infocus@gmail.com

From time to time location shoots are also arranged with models.  Past locations used have been a working garage, medieval hall, derelict church, courtroom, disused office, city subway, cemetery and the beautiful beaches out on the North Norfolk Coast.

For those members who want to learn more about studio photography the sessions provide the opportunity to learn about setting up and using studio lighting to achieve different styles of image, various composition styles using models, image processing and to discuss any questions with other members.

All studio group shoots are well organised, friendly and fun.  We have both male and female photographers taking part and their abilities range from advanced through to beginners. Because the Group’s shoots are open to members of all ages generally there is no nude photography.

New members are particularly welcome, and help is always on hand help anyone who needs advice.
